This file contains corrections, additions and supplemental information to the printed PageMaker 3.0 documentation. We urge you to print and carefully read this file before you start working with PageMaker 3.02. Keep it as a reference and a supplement to your PageMaker manuals.

• CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS
We recommend that you mark the following corrections in your documentation:
3.02 Feature Notes Card
In the full retail version of Aldus Pagemaker 3.02, the 3.02 Import folder, which contains the filter documentation and the filter installer, is located on the Utilities/APDs disk, NOT on the Install disk as stated on the 3.02 Feature Notes card. This folder is installed on your hard disk during installation.

Page 6: The Installer places “pmususer.txt” in the System folder, not in the Hyphenation Dictionaries folder. Leave it in the System folder.
Page 18: The PageMaker 3.02 Aldus Prep file and APD files work with PageMaker 2.0 or 2.0a. If you use both 2.0 or 2.0a and 3.02 on the same Macintosh or network, be sure to remove all PageMaker 2.0 or 2.0a Aldus Prep and APD files. Then move your PageMaker 3.02 Aldus Prep and APD files to your System folder (PageMaker 3.02 searches for APD files first in your PageMaker folder, then in your System folder). If you will be using PageMaker 2.0 or 2.0a, copy no more than 14 APD files into your System folder. Otherwise, there is no limit to the number of APD files you can have in your System folder when using 3.02.
Reference Manual
Page 1-18: There is a 64K limit on files you can place with either of these “Place…” options: “Replace entire story” or “Replace selected text.” When you replace text in your publication with a story that contains graphics, the graphics will not be placed along with the new story. You must place the graphics separately.
Page 1-23: The first two ImageWriter print dialog boxes are in reverse order. Thus, when you select ImageWriter from the Chooser, you see the “Print options…” dialog box first. Click “OK” to display the “Page setup…” dialog box.
Page 1-52: The captions for the top two photographs are reversed. The normal image is on the right and the darkened image is on the left.
Page 1-54: Angles for line screens are measured clockwise, from the 3 o’clock position. The 0° angle is a horizontal line screen.
Page 1-59: Two additional page views are possible with PageMaker 3.02. If you hold down the Shift key and select “Fit in window” from the Page menu, the entire pasteboard will be visible. If you hold down the Shift key and select “200%” from the Page menu, PageMaker will zoom to a 400% view. Also, if you hold down the Option key while selecting a page view, all pages of your publication will be changed to that page view.
Page 2-10: When imported text includes a style with the same name as a style already on the style sheet of your PageMaker publication, PageMaker uses its own definition for that style, rather than the definition from the word-processing application. If you want to import named styles from Microsoft Word, make sure the name doesn’t include any of these symbols—semicolon (;), colon (:), left parenthesis ( ( ), right parenthesis ( ) ), or forward slash (/).

Page iv: There are no printed “PageMaker Release Notes” with PageMaker 3.02.
Page 2-70: Step 6 should read: When entering text inside a graphic’s boundary, either drag-place a text box or adjust the text block handles to ensure that the text block handles are completely inside the graphic’s boundary. Otherwise, the text block will flow around the graphic according to the graphic’s text wrap attributes.
Page 3-20: If you want to import named styles from Microsoft Word, make sure the name doesn’t include any of these symbols—semicolon (;), colon (:), left parenthesis ( ( ), right parenthesis ( ) ), or forward slash (/).
Page 3-65: The kerning increment (the amount of space you insert or delete between pairs of characters) is 1/48th of an em space (i.e., 1/48th the width of an em dash), not 1/24 as stated.
Page 3-71: “Desired letter spacing,” an option in the “Spacing attributes…” dialog box, DOES apply to unjustified text.
Page 3-72: When you specify proportional leading without using autoleading, PageMaker uses the leading value, not the height of the largest character on a line, to apply leading. The leading value is proportioned—two-thirds of the leading value above and one-third below the baseline.
Page 3-80: To insert a non-breaking hyphen in PageMaker, press Option + hyphen (-).
Page 4-25: Step 3 should read “Click and drag on a graphic handle.”
Page 4-29: Step 3 should read “Click and drag on a graphic handle.”
Page 5-4: If you’re using the Apple LaserWriter driver and want to choose a non-standard paper size, hold down the Option key when you choose “Print…” from the File menu—this displays the standard Apple “Print…” dialog box.
Page 5-13: To cancel printing in progress on the ImageWriter and other non-PostScript printers, press Command + period (.). If you’re using version 1.0 of Apple’s LaserWriter II SC driver to print to a LaserWriter II SC printer, make sure “Text smoothing” is NOT checked in the LaserWriter II SC “Print” dialog box. Otherwise, certain point sizes may not print.
Page 5-18: You can scale up to 400% using the Apple driver and up to 1,000% using the Aldus driver.
Page 5-21: If you’re using PageMaker’s manual tiling feature, make sure that the “Facing pages” option is turned off. If the option is turned on, PageMaker will try to print the facing pages as one page because facing pages have a single zero point.
Page 5-26: When you print spot color overlays to a printer with a low resolution (800 dpi or less) PageMaker will print overlays for each color even if no color is specified for that page. However, when you print spot color overlays to a printer with a resolution of 800 dpi or more, PageMaker will not print “blank” overlays.
• SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
This section clarifies documented features and adds information about features not fully documented in the PageMaker 3.0 User and Reference Manuals. Topics are arranged in alphabetical order, so that you can quickly check the location of related material in the index of the printed manuals.
Autoflow
When you automatically flow text into a column that already contains a full-column graphic, PageMaker creates an empty text block at the top of the column. If you later move the graphic, text flows automatically into the column where the graphic used to be—unless you have modified the empty text block in any way (for example, by deleting it, opening and closing it, or adjusting the bottom windowshade handle).
If “Autoflow” is turned on and text flows onto only one or two pages, you may be attempting to flow text onto master pages. Before you automatically flow text, check the icons at the bottom of the screen to see that one of the numbered page icons is highlighted.
Defaults
If text or a graphic drawn with a PageMaker tool is invisible, the default color for your publication may be set to “Paper” or “Reverse.” Use the text tool with nothing selected to set the publication default color for text; use the pointer tool with nothing selected to set the default color for graphics. Select the desired color from the “Colors” palette, or choose the color from the “Define colors…” dialog box and click “OK.”
Define Colors.../Define Styles...
When you want to close the “Define styles” or “Define colors” dialog box without applying a style or a color to selected graphics or text, click “Close.”
EPS files
If you receive a message that says “Filename exceeds 128 characters,” your EPS contains bitmap fonts or binary image data. PageMaker 3.02 cannot place EPS files that contain bitmap fonts (for example, New York, Chicago, and Geneva). Try using a MacPaint, TIFF, or PICT file format instead.
PageMaker places an EPS graphic from a floppy disk as text instead of as a graphic. Either copy the EPS graphic onto your hard disk or rename it to include a .EPS extension.
Graphics
If PageMaker runs out of memory while trying to display a graphic, it displays a gray box in place of the graphic. The graphic will still print as expected. PageMaker may also replace a graphic with a gray box when you’re typing text into a publication that contains a large graphic.
Files are compatible between PageMaker 3.02 and PageMaker Color Extension. However, PageMaker 3.02 does not support some features of PageMaker Color Extension. For example, compressed grayscale and color TIFF files cannot be imported into PageMaker 3.02. Color TIFF images originally imported into a PageMaker Color Extension publication and opened in PageMaker 3.02 will print as a box filled with an “X.”
Also, if you open PageMaker 3.0 or 3.01 and attempt to print a Color Extension publication containing a color image, the print job will be canceled. If you open PageMaker 3.0 or 3.01 and attempt to print a Color Extension publication containing a compressed grayscale TIFF file, the image will print as random data.
ImageWriter and Other Non-PostScript Printers
For best letter and word spacing, select “Tall adjusted” in the ImageWriter “Page setup” dialog box (the second “Print” dialog box).
For a fast, draft print of your publication, choose “Draft” in the ImageWriter “Print” dialog box. The publication’s text will print, but the graphics will not.
To print MacPaint and bi-level (black-and-white) TIFF images at optimal quality to a non-PostScript printer, print any page of your publication (even an empty one) and then resize the images while holding down the Command key (see page 4-28 of the PageMaker 3.0 User Manual). Note: This feature does not work if you are printing to an ImageWriter, but does work for an ImageWriter II.
For optimal printing of non-grayscale TIFF and MacPaint images on the ImageWriter II and the ImageWriter LQ, press the Option key when you click “OK” in the ImageWriter “Print” dialog box. (Note: Printing with this option may degrade text quality; also, some options will be grayed as you continue through the “Print” dialog boxes.)
PageMaker 3.02 requires version 2.0 of the General Computer Personal LaserPrinter driver software. If you have an earlier version, you will need to upgrade to version 2.0. To order your $25 upgrade kit from General Computer, call 1-800-356-6592 (in New York State, 1-800-524-8338). If you have questions about version 2.0 of the General Computer Personal LaserPrinter software, please call General Computer at 617-890-0880 and ask for Customer Support.
Microsoft Write
Although the “Export…” dialog box doesn’t list Microsoft Write as a file format, Microsoft Write files can be placed and exported. If you want to export text in the Microsoft Write file format, export the text as a Microsoft Word file and then open it with Microsoft Write.
MultiFinder
You can improve PageMaker’s performance under MultiFinder by allocating more memory to PageMaker. While in MultiFinder, click the PageMaker program icon, choose “Get Info,” and then type the amount of memory you want to allocate to PageMaker in the “Application Memory Size” box, making sure the number is greater than 700K. If you are running under MultiFinder, you must use the Apple driver if you want to print via the Macintosh Print Manager.
Printing
To print MacPaint and non-grayscale TIFF images at optimal quality to PostScript printers, select the correct printer type, then resize the images while holding down the Command key. To select the correct printer type, choose “Print…” from the File menu, then click “Change…”. In the “Printer-specific” dialog box, select the Aldus driver and the type of printer to which you want to print your final copy. Click “OK” to exit the “Printer-specific options” dialog box. Click “Cancel” to exit the “Print…” dialog box. Hold down the Command key as you resize the graphic; to resize proportionally, press Command + Shift as you resize.
If the letterspacing is incorrect when you print a PageMaker 3.0 publication from PageMaker 3.02, recompose the publication. To recompose a publication, press Option and select “Spacing…” from the Type menu, then click “OK.”
If you ask for an odd (as opposed to an even) number of thumbnails to print on each page, PageMaker will round the number up and create an empty spot to allocate an even number of spots on the page. If you’re printing thumbnails for a double-sided, facing-pages publication, the first spot will be empty.
If you receive the message “Printer is not responding,” check “View last error message” in the “PostScript options…” dialog box and try printing again. Checking this option may also reduce occurrences of this message.
When you choose the Apple driver in the PageMaker “Print” dialog box, the APDs in the “Printer types” list box are not available because the Aldus APDs aren’t used by the Apple driver.
When you install PageMaker 3.02, an APD called General is installed along with the others in the APDs folder. The General APD is also built in to your PageMaker software. If PageMaker cannot locate your APDs folder when you choose “Print... ,” you will receive an error 5221 message. For optimum printing, select the printer-specific APD for your printer. However, you can usually print to any PostScript printer using the General printer type. When you use the General APD instead of the APD specific to your printer, keep these facts in mind:
-Gray levels won’t be as accurate.
-Images resized with the Command key won’t look good when printed to printers with a resolution other than 300 dpi.
-Printing to disk may cause VM errors in the printer.
-Printer-generated error messages won’t always be interpreted correctly.
-Only three paper sizes are available—Letter, A4, and Legal.
-The printer’s actual image area is unknown.
Radius Two Page Display
If you use a Radius Two Page Display and tear off a menu, PageMaker will not flow text automatically. Close the tear-off menus to use the “Autoflow” feature.
Spoolers
PageMaker 3.02 requires version 1.7.1, or later, of the LaserSpeed spooler from Symantec or the TOPS spooler. For upgrade information, call Symantec at 415-964-4440.
PageMaker 3.02 requires version 2.0, or later, of the SuperLaserSpool spooler from SuperMac Technologies. For upgrade information, call SuperMac at 415-964-8884.
Compatibility between 3.02 PageMaker and PageMaker Color Extension
Files are compatible between these two versions of PageMaker. However, PageMaker 3.02 will not support some features of PageMaker Color Extension.
• Color TIFF images originally created in PageMaker Color Extension and opened in PageMaker 3.02 will print as a box filled with an “X.”
• Compressed gray and color TIFF files will not import into PageMaker 3.02.
